I had the sense ofnever having learned my ownlines to any satisfaction . As I grew older it seemed more obvious still that everyone else had memorized their script at birth. And I knew the character I was to play, at last now at twenty- four, but i couldn't convince myself, the way others were so evidently able to, that this character was more than a role in a long and tediously high- flown drama. I could have told you about the audience: they were the ones who had written it. They were the powerful people who awaited us at the edges of life,the priests and the policemen, to tell us how long we had to act for.
